The American Center at U.S. Embassy Dhaka is pleased to announce the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) for Secondary School Educators program, which will take place in summer 2020. The SUSI program is a five-week exchange program sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.
This intensive short-term academic program will include an academic residency component of approximately four weeks and a domestic study tour of approximately one week. The program is focused on providing materials for participants to develop high school level curricula about the United States. Through a combination of traditional and interdisciplinary approaches, program content will impart the history and evolution of U.S. institutions and values. The Institute will also address contemporary political, social, and economic debates in American society and may be organized around a central theme or themes.
The program includes a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures. Coursework and classroom activities will take place alongside educational travel, site visits, leadership activities, and volunteer opportunities with the local community. The one-week educational tour will take participants to another part of the United States where they will meet with local, state, private, and not-for-profit organizations. The Institute will then conclude with two to four days in Washington, D.C. Participants are expected to be highly motivated and exemplary secondary educators who have clear plans to enhance, update, or develop courses and/or educational materials with a U.S. studies focus or component, and who are interested in introducing aspects of U.S. studies at their home institutions. Successful candidates may be Ministry of Education officials, secondary school teachers involved in curriculum development, teacher trainers, curriculum developers, textbook writers, or related professionals with the ability to incorporate American studies in their educational institutions.
The program should not be viewed as a research program. Participants are expected to participate fully, to attend all lectures and organized activities, and to complete assigned readings. Family members and/or friends cannot accompany participants for any part of the program. Please note that teaching methodology and pedagogical methods will not be addressed formally during the Institute.
All participants are required to be proficient in English at a post-graduate level.
We encourage educators from both rural and urban sectors, and with little or no prior experience in the United States or elsewhere outside their home country, to apply.
Candidates nominated for this program will:
– Have the capacity and interest to strengthen curricula and to enhance the quality of teaching about the United States in secondary schools’
-Be mature, responsible, independent, confident, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful, and inquisitive;
-Clearly demonstrate how participation in the Institute will enhance U.S. studies at the participant’s home institution;
-Indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States;
-Commit to returning to their home organizations following completion of the program;
-Have a sustained high level of professional achievement, as indicated through awards and recommendations;
-Have a demonstrated commitment to bring about constructive changes in national curriculum;
-Have had little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of Bangladesh;
-Have computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, internet browsing, online teaching aids, and e-mail communications);
-Be willing and able to fully participate in an intensive post-graduate level academic program;
-Be comfortable with campus life, prepared to share living accommodations, and be able to make adjustments to cultural and social practices different from those of their home country.
