Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)
OSAP is Ontario’s flagship student support program, offering a mix of grants and loans to thousands of students each year.

When to apply
Students in full-time programs: online and paper applications now open.
Students in part-time programs: online and paper applications now open.
Students in micro-credential programs: online applications now open. Paper application expected fall 2021.

If you are applying for OSAP for the 2020-21 academic year, the 2020-21 OSAP applications for full-time, part-time, and micro-credential students are also available.

If you’re returning to school and received OSAP last year, you still have to fill out an OSAP application for this academic year.

Here are the steps you need to take to apply for OSAP.
Register online for an OSAP account
Financial aid from schools
You can check with a college or university directly to see what financial aid programs they offer.
You could be eligible for:
- bursaries
- scholarships
- work-study programs
- summer employment opportunities
These are all sources of money you don’t have to pay back.
Emergency loans
Most schools also offer emergency loans. For example, you could be eligible for a short-term loan (90 days) to cover tuition, if you’re waiting for OSAP to arrive.

Graduate students: apply for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship or the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology at your school’s graduate office. You can get $5,000 per term, to a maximum of $15,000 for an academic year.
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program
Purpose
Students in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels can apply for a merit-based scholarship through the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program.
Awards are available to graduate students for all disciplines of academic study at participating schools in Ontario.
Each award is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario (two thirds) and the school offering the award (one third).
How much can I get
OGS awards are based on the number of terms of your consecutive studies within an academic year:
- $10,000 for 2 consecutive study terms
- $15,000 for 3 consecutive study terms
Each OGS award is issued for:
- a minimum of 1 academic year (2 or 3 consecutive academic terms)
- a maximum of 2 years (up to 6 consecutive academic terms).
Lifetime Maximums
The OGS awards maximums are:
- Master’s students: 2 academic years
- Doctoral students: 4 academic years
- Lifetime limit (all students): 6 academic years
Who is eligible
OGS is a merit-based scholarship. Your application is assessed and ranked using criteria determined by the school you’re planning to attend.
To be considered, you must also meet the following criteria:
- You’ll be in graduate studies in the master’s or doctoral level
- You’ll be enrolled in a full-time program for 2 or more terms (21 to 52 weeks in total) for the academic year you’re submitting your application.
- You’ll be attending one of the following participating Ontario school:

- McMaster University
- Nipissing University
- OCAD University
- University of Ontario Institute of Technology

Use your school’s OGS application. They are normally available in October.
If you’re applying to more than one graduate program at different schools, submit an OGS application for each school.
Contact the Graduate Studies Office at the school you’re planning to attend for details on their application process.

Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) Program
Purpose
Students in science and technology at the master’s and doctoral levels can apply for a merit-based scholarship through the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) Program.
Awards are available to graduate students in approved research programs in science and technology disciplines at participating schools in Ontario.
Each award is jointly funded by the Province of Ontario (two thirds) and the school offering the award (one third).

Bank loans
Banks, trust companies and credit unions offer student loans and lines of credit. Talk to your financial institution for information.
Self-funded
It’s a good idea to save money from a summer job or job you hold throughout the year to help pay for your education.
Your parents or other relatives might also be able to contribute to education costs.
Another option is to consider investing savings through a bank/financial institution – so that money can earn interest – if you plan to attend college or university in the future.
